The Costco Ideal

October 11, 2009 by Stephen Pasquini

today before I went to bed I decided to see what was really in that Costco Pizza I ate the other day. And why after eating it I felt both very full and kind of sick. To my surprise this is what I discovered: one slice of Costco Pizza has over 770 callories. Can you believe that? So in curiosity I thought I might as well see how much damage the Costco Caesar salad would be since I thought that may be a better low calorie option get this: 756 calories! One slice of round table pizza, around 270 calories. Still, that doesn’t come close to Costco. And how much do you think is in the famous Costco hot dog, any guesses? 565 calories. So in the eat this not that crowd, I would say that big ol’ heart attack on the plate keeps looking better. I ask this. Do coorporations have a responsibility to the public as far as our health. I just can’t immagine they could make a salad that has more calories than the hot dog and the entire frozen yogurt that they serve combined. The burger king whopper has 678 calories and 35g of fat, the french fries have another 529 calories and how about that Applebees oriental chicken salad, you guessed it almost 800 calories. Now lets look at data for exercise:
In “Energy Expenditure of Walking and Running,” published last December in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, a group of Syracuse University researchers measured the actual calorie burn of 12 men and 12 women while running and walking 1,600 meters (roughly a mile) on a treadmill. Result: The men burned an average of 124 calories while running, and just 88 while walking; the women burned 105 and 74. (The men burned more than the women because they weighed more.)
Now to look at walking and Pedometers (since my dad uses one). it takes 2000 steps to walk one mile = 88 calories, 6000 steps is 264 calories, and our basic metabolic rate (here it is based on weight and sex) can be calculated. I can’t immagine that any of us do enough exercise. Studies have shown that tribal groups burn greater than 3000 calories per day, no wonder they don’t have an obesity epidemic.
What this all comes down to is a commitment to exercise, we think that we do it, when we walk or bike 1.5 miles, or get the side salad at our meal out. But most of this is modern society’s take on a healthy lifestyle, which by the looks of it with more than 1 in 4 people currently diagnosed with diabetes is modern yet not healthy. And honestly I think Costco should be ashamed, they haven’t offered there pizza yet with a free coke, but guess what that does come with the hot dog!
